Dry needling is a treatment technique wherein thin filiform needles penetrate the skin to stimulate the underlying myofascial trigger points, and muscular and connective tissues to manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. But what are trigger points? A trigger point is a tight band in a muscle fiber (a knot) that causes pain, disrupts function, and restricts range of motion, when dry needling is applied to the trigger point, it stimulates a twitch response in these muscle fibers which then release the spasm causing the pain or disruption. Its referred to as dry needling because the needles do not inject anything into the body, hence the term “dry”.
Dry needling is a widely used, evidence-based treatment carried out by our certified physiotherapists, demonstrated to be highly effective for many conditions and to treat a wide range of symptoms, commonly including:
Here at BOC we pride ourselves on our professional diagnostic ability and treatment experience
Your practitioner may ask you about your symptoms, behaviour and lifestyle. He or she may also closely examine your body for painful parts, strength and rhythm of your pulse, the colour of your face and tongue As you lie on the padded table for the treatment, very fine and solid needles (generally 5 to 20 needles) will be inserted in the targeted site. This is usually pain free or causes little discomfort, the practitioner may then gently manipulate the needles by being moving, twirling, or applying cold/heat/mild electrical impulses to them. The needles stay in for approximately 10-15 minutes and are then removed with no discomfort.
